Dr Hannah Greenhough

My research spans aquatic health, algal biotechnology, and climate change impacts on marine systems. I recently completed my PhD, which investigated how harmful algal bloom–forming microalgae (specifically Alexandrium spp.) and climate-driven stressors affect the early life stages of green-lipped mussels (Perna canaliculus). This work was multidisciplinary, using transcriptomics, flow cytometry, histopathology, in vitro bioassays, and whole-animal physiological assessments to understand organismal responses from gene to tissue level. My other key area of interest is optimising the growth of diverse microalgal species including HABs, with a particular focus on those producing novel bioactive compounds for pharmaceutical and veterinary applications. This research involves large scale microalgal cultivation and harvesting as well as bioactive compound isolation and purification. I have experience using advanced tools such as photobioreactors and liquid chromatography–mass spectrometry, as well as developing and implementing robust quality systems for research and production of these compounds.
