Background
I am an early-career scientist with over eight years of experience in molecular ecology, specialising in the application of DNA metabarcoding and omics approaches to harmful algal bloom research. My work focuses on benthic dinoflagellate communities along the Queensland coast, with particular emphasis on Gambierdiscus. Using high-resolution sequencing methods, I investigate patterns of diversity, distribution, and ecological drivers across a range of reef and coastal habitats. Alongside molecular approaches, I have expertise in toxin detection and risk assessment. My research includes the detection of ciguatoxins in reef fish from the Coral Sea Marine Park, employing both chemical methods and cell-based assays. I also use stable isotope analysis to trace trophic pathways and improve understanding of how algal toxins move through coral reef food webs. My regional focus is on tropical and subtropical Australia, particularly the Great Barrier Reef and Coral Sea Marine Park. I collaborate with national and regional partners to develop tools that integrate molecular and toxin-based monitoring approaches, supporting fisheries management, public health, and conservation. By contributing to the Australian and New Zealand Marine HAB Network, I aim to strengthen regional collaboration and support efforts to improve HAB detection, monitoring, and management.
