Background

I am a biological oceanographer specialising in plankton ecology and the application of advanced technologies to contribute to large-scale, industry focused projects that underpin a sustainable blue economy. My work bridges observation and modelling: I collaborate closely with ecosystem and fishery modelers to deliver high-quality, data-driven parameters that improve the representation of plankton in ecosystem models. This enhances the accuracy of predictions around biodiversity, food web dynamics, carbon cycling, and climate change impacts — ultimately informing better management and conservation of marine resources. My projects focus on automating plankton classification, using high-resolution imagery from state-of-the-art instruments (FlowCam Cyano, FlowCam 8000 and Zooscan). I use stable isotopes and fatty acids to describe planktonic food webs and links with higher trophic levels.
