Dear ANZ HABNet members,


It has been a busy first half of the year, with several significant HAB happenings and events in planning. We thought it would be timely to update you on ANZ HABNet activities and plans for the rest of the year.


Incorporation: Exciting times! We have developed a constitution that has been lodged with our submission for incorporation in NSW. Following incorporation we will formally announce an interim committee, including President, Vice President, Secretary, Treasurer and Public Officer. We will then set a date for the AGM and call for nominations for committee positions, to be voted in at the AGM. We welcome member participation and nominations for committee positions to support the network into the future.


Next training event: We are organising another HAB symposium and identification workshop - this time in Hobart, following the Australian Society of Phycology and Aquatic Botany annual meeting in November. The symposium will be on the 25th Nov followed by the identification workshop on the 26th Nov. Details on how to register will follow.

  • A new article in the IOC newsletter Harmful Algal News Catastrophic marine mass mortalities, shellfish toxicity and human respiratory problems from a Karenia cristata dinoflagellate bloom in South Australia, 2025-2026

  • A new bulletin board for upcoming HAB related activities - there are two conferences of interest in Australia (Aus Marine Sciences Association and Aus Society of Phycology and Aquatic Botany) and the International Conference on Molluscan Shellfish Safety in Exeter.
